Principal’s Panda Updates: Week of September 7, 2020

Happy Labor Day, Barnard Families!  Hopefully you were able to stay cool, and get some rest this long, holiday weekend!

Panda Updates Below:

  1. We’re poised and ready to begin our online school year in earnest this week! Please do your best to encourage your student(s) to log-on to their teacher’s live Zoom sessions to be able to get the maximum benefit of our language offerings.   Teachers will continue to build community with their classes, forge important relationships with students, and will do their best to provide appropriate assessments to determine readiness levels.  Our staff understands that the past six months has been rough, and will be adapting the curriculum to reflect that.
  2. If you are experiencing TECHNOLOGY ISSUES, please reach out to our district Tech Help Line, 619-732-1400.  They can assist with computer problems, log-in trouble, network assistance, and much more!!  In addition, you may find assistance at the SDUSD Technology web page.  Click or copy/paste link: https://sites.google.com/sandi.net/instructionalcontinuityit/technology-support-for-families

If you will need to exchange a computer, they will be able to direct you to the nearest device distribution center.  We apologize, but we are no longer able to exchange computers at the school site.
  3. If you run into a difficulty with anything related to your child’s classwork, or challenges with assignments, etc., please reach out to your child’s teacher first.  They are poised and ready to receive feedback, and reflect on practice, so that we can pivot to ensure we are providing optimum learning for all students.
  4. If your family is experiencing struggles related to Zoom schedules that are not allowing for your child to log-in on a regular basis, and you are considering other options, please reach out to us.  We want to work with you, and understand that online learning is a challenge in even the best of circumstances.
  5. A HUGE PANDA THANK YOU to those of you who were able to join us for our first all-school Monday morning assembly last Monday!  We kicked off the school year with 383 panda families, Barnard staff, our Area Superintendent, Christina Casillas, and Taylor, our American Heart Association sponsor!!  We will continue the tradition every first Monday of the month, at 7:45am, with the Zoom link sent out the night before.  Our next Spirit Assembly will be Monday, 10/5, @ 7:45am!
  6. If you are still in need of curriculum materials, or are not able to print out classroom assignments, please reach out to your teacher, who will work with our awesome office staff to coordinate a date/time for pick-up at Barnard.  Please keep in mind, our staff is mostly working from home, unless there is a need to complete essential tasks on site.
  7. Most teachers are currently still getting their online classrooms and curriculum up and running, and are not ready to work with Room Parents just yet.  They will contact their families when they are ready to begin the process, and once we have had a chance to meet as a team to discuss expectations/guidelines in our new digital educational landscape.
  8. COMING THIS WEEK…NIHAO NEW PANDA FAMILY INFORMATION SESSION this Thursday, September 10th, from 5pm-6pm.  This is a chance for brand-new Barnard families to learn about our awesome PTA, and some of the many programs our school offers! Zoom link e-mailed via School Messenger.
  9. STAY TUNED FOR SPIRIT WEEK DETAILS COMING SOON!! We will celebrate our Barnard spirit the week of September 21!!
  10. We will also be hosting parent workshops in conjunction with Bilingual Kids, on how to best support your child’s language learning during online education…more info to come!!

Lastly, I want to recognize the PHENOMENAL job you are all doing in service of your kids’ education!!  We know that it is definitely NOT easy, and we want to recognize you for hanging in there, being flexible, giving yourself and others tons of grace and patience, and most of all, for your support of our fabulous Barnard program and staff!!

I am humbled by the sacrifices that everyone is making, and by the dedication that I see every day!! We are truly #barnardstrong, and have an abundance of #pandapride…please remember…#weareallinthistogether

Kindly,

Principal Waller  :o)

Subj: Student Rosters

Good Morning Barnard Families

We are happy to announce our class rosters are finalized for the 2020-21 school year. Please note we worked hard to build equitable and balanced classes across a number of factors and are unable to entertain class changes.

In order to ensure the health and safety of our families, rosters will not be physically posted at our site. This year you can access your child’s teacher by having your child log into CLEVER or you logging into Powerschool Parent Portal.

Watch this video for how to sign in to Clever Once you sign in, the name of your child’s teacher will appear.

Please view this video for creating your Parent Portal account

We are so excited for the school year! Please know many preparations are still underway as we continue to enroll new families! Families that enrolled today may not see their child’s class assignment tonight as PowerSchool has to sync with Clever.  Later today, you will receive a welcome letter from your child’s teacher via email. This message will include details about how to login to your first Zoom meeting on Monday.

We are looking forward to a wonderful year of learning!

With Love, The Barnard Staff

Subj: *Corrections/Clarifications*

Hello again families!

My apologies…I need to correct and clarify the information that was sent out about computers this evening:

*The correct date of the Materials Distribution is Friday, August 28th, 11am-3pm, by alpha

*We have not set the makeup date and time yet if you are unable to drive thru on 8/28

*If your student(s) is already using a district computer, they will continue to use that same one

*If you would like to use your own computer, you may do so. SDUSD recommended using a district device due to the applications installed in all of our devices, but if you are more comfortable using your own, then you have that choice, and don’t need to fill out the form.

*We were not sent wifi hot spots, but please call the district Tech Help line 619-732-1400, (Mon-Fri, 8am-5pm) to see about the availability of them

*If your student’s computer is not working properly, please call the number above, to see if they can assist, and if they cannot, please fill out the technology form (https://forms.gle/qpHxj7sZG3VXmVre7), and bring the non-working device on Friday, 8/28, 11am-3pm to exchange.

Thank you for your understanding.

Subj: School Computer Survey

Happy Monday, Barnard Panda Families!

If you are in need of a school computer for your child(ren), please fill-out our Technology Needs Survey in the link below.

The purpose of this survey is to determine the technology needs of EACH Barnard student in your family, so they can prepare for online learning beginning Monday, 8/31.

Your child does not need to use a district computer, and you are free to use your own device if that works for your family.

If you have more than one student, please complete the survey once for each child.

Please complete this survey by Thursday, 8/27, 12pm.
We will then prepare computers to be included in our drive-up materials distribution on Friday, 8/28, from 11-3 (by alpha name).
Thank you!

-Barb Waller-Principal

*P.S. if you don’t need a computer from the school, you do NOT need to fill out this survey!!

Subj: Barnard Updates: Week of August 24, 2020

Good Evening Barnard Panda Families,

I hope this message finds you and your family healthy and enjoying your last days of summer. We have been extremely busy these last couple weeks preparing for a successful start to the 2020-21 school year.  Below are some additional details & actions you may need to take before school starts on August 31st.

Student Materials Distribution
In order to provide our families with hands-on materials that students may need during online learning, we will be distributing consumable materials, (including Math workbooks) on Friday, August 28th, from 11am-3pm (schedule below) via socially distanced drive-thru in our parking lot.

For those families who also need a computer, or to exchange a non-working computer, you may also pick one up during your timeslot.  If the time assigned for pick up does not work with your schedule, we will be having a make-up day the week of August 31st.  (Look for computer survey form to complete on Tuesday, so that we can have your device ready to go on Friday!)

In addition, please bring any library books or school materials that you have come across over the summer from last school year.  Please place these items in a disposable bag with the teacher’s name inside the bag, & drop it off when you pick up your materials.

Student Devices – IMPORTANT!
San Diego Unified School District has changed their student device program. Starting the 2020-21 school year all students will be assigned a device.  If your child did not check out a device during Distance Learning, or is new to the district, you will need to check out a device for your child.  Look for a computer survey form to complete on Tuesday, so that we can have your device ready to go on Friday!

We have scheduled device distribution at Barnard, in conjunction with our materials distribution on August 28th by student last name.  Please see below for the time you are assigned based on your student’s last name.  If these times do not work for you, we will have a make-up day the week of August 31st (date and time TBA).

Materials and Computer Distribution Schedule for Friday, August 28th
Last Names A – F   11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Last Names G – M 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Last Names N – S   1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.
Last Names T – Z    2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
*if at all possible, please try to arrive within your timeframe

**it would be helpful if you display a piece of paper that lists student name(s), grade(s)…thank you  :o)

Class Placements

I will be sending out class placements by Friday, August 28th, and teachers will be reaching out to you as well, with their schedules, and other important information.

First Week of School
During the first week of school, Aug. 31-Sept. 4, teachers will be attending district provided trainings/workshops as well as checking in with their students each day. During this first week of school, students will be given assigned district learning modules, and to support families, the district will also be providing Family Workshops. The topics and schedules have not yet been released. I will keep you updated as I receive information.

Orientation/Back To School Night
All of our amazing teachers will be hosting Zoom orientations the first week of school, instead of waiting for Back To School Night, which generally takes place a few weeks into the school year.  Teachers will send out their schedule and Zoom links to their classes by Friday, August 28th, as they are still enjoying the last days of their vacation.

Thank you for taking the time to make note of these important dates and information pieces.

I will keep you updated with additional information through the week as I receive it, and again I will be sending out class placements by Friday, August 28th.  If you are in need of a device, please be sure to fill out the form that will be sent out on Tuesday.  We are planning, and will be ready for, a meaningful and robust school year whether we are learning online or in person.

Subj: Barnard Updates: Week of August 10, 2020

Dear Barnard Families,

In conjunction with SDEA, the San Diego Unified School District released a statement on August 2nd, that outlined the initial online plan for students to continue learning and growing when we return to school online on August 31st. This plan will need to be ratified by the SDEA members, but the framework that was bargained is a robust plan to ensure student achievement.

On August 10th, San Diego Unified district leaders will release additional details about online learning and provide the next public assessment of when it will be safe to physically reopen our school campus. Principals will attend a district meeting that day to receive important updates, and will begin the process of working with our area, cluster, and language principal groups to insure that we have all of the information needed to successfully open up the 2020-2021 school year. In addition, I will be meeting with our staff, the PTA, and our families, to gather additional input, and ensure that critical answers are provided.

Barnard Family Q & A Meeting

As an important partner in onsite and online learning, I have scheduled an opportunity for you to ask questions, and provide your insights about the reopening plan that will be released to us by the district on August 10. As we progress through the planning process, additional opportunities to provide suggestions may also be necessary. The initial meeting will be held:

Friday, August 14th 10:00-11:00 a.m.

The Zoom link has been sent via School Messenger (if you are unable to attend this meeting, we will be recording the meeting so that you may watch at a later date, and we will also be providing a link to the questions and answers asked)

Questions about computer devices

This spring, many of you picked up Chromebooks from a San Diego Unified distribution center. For families who are new to Barnard, and those of you who chose not to check out a Chromebook, please know that information will be coming soon about how to check out a device for use at home and school during the 2020-21 school year.

Thank you for your support

I continue to hear from you regarding the start of the school year and what school will look like at Barnard. I hear your curiosity, anxiety, and concern. Our school is very special, and important to me and I understand the need for flexibility to meet the needs of our families and our students. While there are still many unknowns, what we do know is that we have an opportunity to come together as a community – united – in support of our students and our school. We look forward to partnering with you in the coming weeks as we prepare to launch the new school year.

Take care and be well.

Kindly,

Barb Waller-Principal

Subj: Principal Meet & Greet

Hello Barnard Families!!

I hope that  you have been able to soak up a little San Diego summer with your little pandas!  And most importantly, I sincerely hope that everyone is safe and healthy.

You are cordially invited to a Parent Meet & Greet this Thursday, July 30th!  There will be two sessions offered: one from 9am-10am, and then the other from 4pm-5pm!

Yes, principals are technically on our 14 day break, but I felt that it was important to connect, so that I can share the limited information that I currently have regarding school reopening and distance learning.  Our amazing PTA will also take a few minutes to share some info with you as well.

The district will be releasing more details regarding reopening and distance learning on August 10th, and I will then schedule an additional parent informational meeting, once I have received, and have complete understanding of, the details.

The Meet & Greet is a completely optional event, but I hope to be able to begin to connect, even if it’s from a distance!

The TWO Zoom links have been e-mailed…one is from the morning session, and the other for the afternoon. If you did not receive this information, please e-mail barnardpta@gmail.com.

Thank you very much, and please say “hello” to all of our panda students!!

Kindly,

Barb Waller-Principal

Subj: July 17 Updates

Good Afternoon Barnard Families and Staff,

As you know, San Diego Unified recently announced that all schools will start the school year online. This decision was made in the interest of safety for all – students, staff, and parents. Our district has expressed that this situation is changing constantly, and presently San Diego County remains on the state’s monitoring/watch list.

Today Governor Newsom announced a list of requirements for all California schools. These policies should streamline the format of schooling (in-person, hybrid, and online) throughout the state. Here are a few highlights from Governor Newsom’s plan:

  • Schools can only offer in-person learning when the county has been off the monitoring list for 14 consecutive days.
  • Regular testing and dedicated contact tracing is part of the plan for schools.
  • Classrooms will close when positive tests occur
  • Masks are required for staff, as well as students in grades 3-12. Masks are highly recommended for students grades 2 and below.
  • Handwashing stations and handwashing requirements will be in place.
  • Schools will close when a threshold of positive tests is reached within the school community.
  • Online instruction must be rigorous and include daily, live interaction with students.
  • English Learners and Students with Disabilities will receive targeted supports.
  • An emphasis on small group instruction and learning through collaboration will be guiding instructional practices.

For me as a leader, safety has, and will remain, a top priority.  Campus safety and access to the quality standards-based curriculum will continue to guide our decisions. Barnard Elementary will resume its culture of excellence, be the extra effort school, and support continuous improvement for all students. Barnard has excellent teachers and staff that will continue to ensure that all students will receive excellent instruction. We look forward to partnering with you to support our school.

This new information will help us to continue working hard behind the scenes. Custodial staff is on-site daily preparing for the return of staff and students. Computers will be present for all children to access come fall. We look forward to the day when we can begin person-to-person instruction safely again. On August 10th, the district will be providing us with more details on the next steps.

Please continue to let your children know we care about them and look forward to seeing them again.  Be safe-we look forward to working more closely with you as the start of the year approaches and we have new guiding information.

Kindly,

Barb Waller-Principal

Subj: Message from Mission Bay Cluster Principals

Good Evening Mission Bay Cluster Families,

On Tuesday, June 16, 2020, the San Diego Unified School District Board of Trustees approved a vision for the 2020-2021 school year. Their recommendation will allow for the reopening of our physical school campuses on August 31, 2020. Options for families will include daily in-person instruction or to continue at home online learning with opportunities for scheduled visits to campus. We thank you for attending our Mission Bay Cluster meeting and providing feedback which was included in the outline approved this week. Click here to review the DRAFT Outline for Reopening of Schools

We want all of our families in the cluster to provide input and insight as we move forward in this endeavor. With multiple options for your child’s education for the upcoming school year, it is critical that we have your initial preferences documented. You should have received an email message from the district with a link to a survey collecting information on each family’s preference. You may also access the survey link here:Learning Options & Reopening. This information along with feedback regarding distance learning which was experienced from March through June will be used to refine and enhance our vision moving forward.

Tentative Timeline: (subject to change due to the fluid nature of our circumstances, California Department of Public Health guidelines and requirements from state and local authorities)

  • June 18-25 Initial Family Input: Complete Learning Options & Reopening Survey
  • June 26-August 7 Stakeholder Input and Planning
  • August 10-28 Revision and Implementation of Plans
  • August 31 First Day of School

We appreciate your partnership and look forward to reviewing your input. Opportunities to finalize your decision for your child’s school model preference will be provided in August. The Mission Bay Cluster principals value your collaboration as we commit to high quality academic programming in healthy, safe environments with a focus on meeting the social emotional and academic needs of our children.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Grondek             Aida Hernandez             Armando Lopez            Kimberly Meng Ernest Remillard             Judith Fogel                    Mary Romero-Heyne

Subj: Parent Learning Options and Reopening Input Survey

Dear SDUSD Families,

San Diego Unified is preparing to reopen our schools on August 31st with a focus on health and safety. Families will have a choice of high quality instructional options including attending class online, attending class on campus, or a combination of both. To support us in our planning we are seeking your input regarding your current attendance preference. Please complete this survey: Parent Learning Options and Reopening Input Survey.

Please note the purpose of this survey is only to help schools plan for next year and get an idea of instructional option interest. You will have an opportunity later in the summer to formally register for the program that will work best for your family.

Please complete one survey for EACH child that attends our SDUSD schools by June 25th @ 5:00 p.m.

###

Subj: weekly announcement for June 8, 2020

Hello Barnard families,

As the last two days of school come upon us, I would like to thank you all for your endless support over the years.  My time as principal at Barnard will always have a special place in my heart.  This was not how I thought my last months at Barnard were going to be when I first announced my retirement, but as always, the Barnard school community is a strong one, and we have met the challenge before us with grit and grace.

I have a few updates to share with you:

The district is planning on putting together grade level curriculum for parent access over the summer to help with preventing the summer slide.  This will not be mandatory, only an option for those who choose to access the curriculum (I know the last thing on your mind is more home schooling right now, please give yourselves and your children time to breathe, laugh, run, and play).

Your child’s end of the year report card will be available on the “parent portal” website.  You will not receive a physical copy of the report card, as no report cards are being mailed home per district directive.  I have attached a “cheat sheet” to login on and setting up your parent portal website (in a separate email), if you haven’t already done so.

Chinese report cards will be emailed to you.  Please ensure your child’s Chinese teacher has the correct email for you.

Interviews for your new principal have been held, and as soon as the school board has selected a candidate, I will be sure to help them to introduce themselves to you via the school messenger format.

As I stated in last weeks weekly message, the school board will be meeting on June 16th to discuss the plan for school this fall.  Principals will be attending a meeting on June 18th to hear the plan, principals and prospective unions will be allowed to provide feedback.  As soon as the plan has been finalized and I am directed to share the information with you all, I will be sure to send you a “school-messenger” message like this one with the plan for the fall.

I have also attached in the email you will receive a list of community resources with useful phone numbers to several useful community services.Community Resource List.doc

I would like to wish everyone a healthy and restful summer break.   I will miss you all dearly.  It has been my honor to serve as your principal these past 5 years.

Sincerely,

Principal Hernandez

Subj: Thursday library book/personal item pick up

Hello Barnard Families,

I have attached the schedule for Thursday’s instrument and library drop off and personal item pick up from the classroom schedule.  This is the schedule you should follow, any previous schedule sent is not valid.  We have scheduled the students by grade level.  Just a reminder students with siblings in multiple grade levels can come at the time of their youngest sibling.  All items being returned (library books and small instruments) must be in a closed plastic bag with your child’s name on the inside, written on a piece of paper.  5th grade students you will be picking up your 5th grade graduation t-shirt.  Remember, everyone has to follow Social distancing guidelines and wear a mask.
Thank you,

Dear Barnard families,

I hope this email finds you and your loved ones well.  I have a new update regarding graduating 5th graders and students not returning to Barnard.

On Thursday, June 4th graduating 5th grade students and students not returning to Barnard next year may come and return their library books and music instruments they borrowed from the district.

The procedure for this will be as follows:

1) Students with last names A through L families can come between 8:00 am -9:00 am and drive through the teacher parking lot entering off of Culver St.  There will be no exiting of vehicles and only drop off from the vehicle.  A staff member will retrieve the instrument and library books from your car.  We are asking all persons to wear a mask.  All staff members will be wearing a mask and gloves.

2) Students with last names M through Z can come between 9:00-10:00 am.  This is for students graduating and/or not returning to Barnard only.

All other students may return their library books once school reopens for regular business.

Thank you for your continued patience and understanding during this time.  There will be no other day to return your library books or instruments at this time.  If you cannot return them on June 4th, then you will need to return them once school reopens for regular business.  The staff at Barnard wish you and your family continued health and safety during this time.

Thank you,

Principal Hernandez

Subj: weekly updates

Hello Barnard families, this is Principal Hernandez with a weekly update. This update will be sent via email as well.

As as a school community we are partners in this. We all know that distance learning cannot replace in-person instruction in the classroom. I ask that you give our teachers grace as they navigate this new territory. During Distance Learning, there may be a variance in work and communication across classrooms. We ask that you avoid comparing teachers to one another –especially on social media and in public forums, as everyone is on a different learning curve and everyone has a different personal situation. We are proud of our staff for jumping in with new learning for themselves and their students and understand that this experience is different for everyone. We encourage you to work in partnership with your child’s teachers.  Our partnership together is what will ensure a successful experience for all.

I expect that all of our students have access to a device and internet.  I am also hoping that 100% of our students are engaging in Distance Learning.   Teachers are tracking participation not attendance.

Here are some key ideas to understand:

  • Please know for students to be considered active participants in Distance Learning, students will need to participate and complete assignments.  Teachers may assign other assignments in various programs but a bulk of the assignments will need to be completed in Seesaw or Google classroom.
  • Distance Learning may look different from classroom to classroom.
  • Grade level teams are working together and collaborating, but once again, the instruction will vary in regards to the assignments and schedules.
  • The district is monitoring student participation.  Participation can and will include email communication and/or a phone call with the teacher, turning in of an assignment, participation in a Zoom class meeting and/or participating/accessing an online assignment.
  • Each Friday, teachers will mark students ABSENT if they have not participated in Distance Learning during the week.  This will allow for flexibility for families during the week who are juggling their own “work at home jobs and multiple school age siblings”.
  • Attendance and participation matters.
  • Grading began Monday, April 27th, but more importantly, we want to do all that we can to ensure your child is prepared for next year’s grade level.
  • The point of grading during Distance Learning is to assess progress; I don’t want to imply that grades don’t matter; but I want to assure you that no child will fail their grade or be retained due to their inability to turn in an assignment and/or participate in Distance Learning.

Once again, thank you for your flexibility, support and continued partnership.

Subj: weekly update 4/10/20

Hello Barnard families,

This is principal Hernandez with an update.

This week marks the end of the first week of our soft launch.  Teachers are working together to share new learning.  I held a virtual staff meeting on Tuesday, and we will continue to meet weekly as a staff to trouble shoot issues and concerns.

One thing we noticed was that families with multiple siblings in the household all trying to do their distance learning were having difficulties trying to organize their schedule at home since many parents are also working from home.  A solution to this is that teachers are sharing with one another tips on how to pre-record some of their lessons, and then use Office hours to answer questions.  We hope this gives you greater flexibility at home to assist all your children with their distance learning, this also helps our teachers who are also having to ensure their own children are doing their distance learning lessons at home.

Some of our teachers are still attending online training, and we ask your patience as they become familiar with using some of the online platforms for distance learning.  This is why you may notice that one of your child’s teachers is using a particular platform for instruction, than your other child’s teacher.

Barnard teachers are still working together in grade level teams and coordinating their lesson platforms as best they can.

Information is changing daily and I am trying to keep you all updated as soon as I receive information that is of importance to families.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT:  Beginning this Monday, Coach MJ and myself will begin Monday Morning assemblies every Monday morning at 8am.  See your child’s class shutterfly account for the Zoom link.  We are not going to post the link on the school website in order to prevent unwanted people with bad intentions from joining or Zoom bombing our assembly.

On a personal happy note, the Hernandez family will soon have a new addition to our family.  My future daughter-in-law is in the first stage of labor and we hope to see our new grandson sometime this weekend.  We are hoping for a safe and healthy delivery.  The hospital is still deciding if whether they are going to allow my son to be present at the delivery (just another sign of the times we are in).

Take care and stay healthy,

Principal Hernandez

Hello again Barnard Families,
This is Principal Hernandez.  A few questions have come up that some of you may have as well.

1) The mandatory pick up at our assigned site of Claremont High School, trumps any previous information provided by the district.  This is the most current information in regards to device pick up.
2)  Only the parent or guardian listed on the registration card may pick up the device.  Please be sure to bring your photo ID.
3) Students do not need to be present at the pick up location.

Bonny is trying her best to keep our school website updated with the latest information regarding device pick up.

Subj: Computer distribution updates

Hello Barnard families,

I hope this message finds you and your family well.  I have an update in regards to student device/computer distribution.  Yesterday the district began distributing student devices to families.  As a result, a few things have changed:

1)  You now can only go to the assigned date/time and location Barnard was assigned for pick up.  Barnard’s pick-up information is as follows:  April 16th at Clairemont High School from 9:00am – 12:30pm.  The district is currently working on a make-up day for those who cannot make the assigned day/time.

2) Advice from issues that arose at yesterday’s device pick-up:  Check the device before you leave.  There were some reports of broken key boards, and/or cracked screens.  This will result in you having to make another trip to exchange the device.  Rather than that happening, check it before you leave.

3) If you have not completed the online technology survey, you may still pick up a device for your student, you just need to go on our assigned day and to our assigned site and time.  If there are mutliple students in a household, the district is doing their best to bundle devices so that a family only needs to make one trip.

4) During the official launch of distance learning, that begins on April 27th, the district has asked us to track participation/attendance, so that we can assure we are not missing a student that for some reason isn’t able to connect with school.

I wanted to get this information out to you as soon as I was informed so that you can make arrangements in your schedule to pick up a computer on our assigned day if your child needs one.  Information about internet access was sent to you in a letter/message from Supt. Cindy Marten.  There are companies offering discounted internet service for those who need it.

I know that all these changes can be frustrating for us all, information to principals is changing daily, and I will do my best to get pertinent information out to you as soon as I receive it.

Live with peace and grace and health,
Take care,
Principal Hernandez

This is principal Hernandez with an update.  I hope this message finds each and everyone of you healthy and well.  As we prepare to enter our second week of school closures, I want to reach out and let you know myself and the staff at Barnard are thinking of you and your families.

The instructional resources posted on our district website and assignments provided by our teachers are for enrichment only–meaning students will not receive grades on these tasks.  It is not our expectation that students complete each and every  assignment; but that they have opportunities to engage in academic tasks throughout the content areas.

Barnard staff is here to support you during this time.  Though the physical doors of the school are closed, we are still open for supporting our students and their families.  Many of the teachers have begun teaching via Zoom meetings, Flipgrid, google classroom in order to keep the school connection and education of our students during this unprecedented time.
Please reach out to us via email and we will respond as soon as we are able.

In closing, I’d like to invite all of our Barnard families to participate  in the Kindness Challenge initiated by one of our district schools, Standley Middle school, Principal Pearson has challenged students in the UC cluster to spread kindness in the following way:

*  Cut out a heart of any size from any material (craft paper, cardboard, wrapping paper, newspaper, fabric, etc.)
*  Decorate your heart with a  positive message or feel free to leave it blank
*  Tape your heart to a s street facing window to show your love  and support to all
*  Don’t forget to take a picture and share it with our school community on social media

I look forward to seeing how Barnard spreads the kindness!
Another reminder, school will not be in session online or otherwise during Spring break from Monday, March 30- Friday, April 3rd.  During this time, teachers will not be available to provide supplemental educational resources.

Thank you,
Principal Hernandez
