Barnard Annual Giving
What is Barnard Annual Giving (BAG)?
Barnard Annual Giving is the first of three major fundraisers that our PTA has each year (the
other two being a jog-a-thon and a spring auction/gala. For BAG, parents are asked
to make a direct financial donation to the PTA. We never ask our community to sell anything,
and we keep the bulk of fundraising to these three main events.
How do I give?
Giving is easy! You can:
- Fill out and submit this BAG form at school with your payment of cash or check; or
- Make a one-time or monthly recurring donation via PayPal
Why BAG? (a.k.a. Isn’t public school supposed to be free?)
Public schools are woefully underfunded. There may be public schools that do not raise money
from their community. However, competitive schools like La Jolla and Bird Rock Elementary,
and even many private schools, routinely ask their families to raise hundreds of thousands of
dollars to help meet their educational goals. Barnard is a magnet school with unique needs,
and yet we are funded like any other public school. We need your help to provide our children
with the high-quality education that we want them to have.
When does BAG happen?
Our main BAG campaign runs from September 6-30, 2022, but you can give all year long with recurring payments! Please make your contribution early so it can have the biggest impact.
Where does my money go?
This year the PTA hopes to provide our students with these programs and more:
CHINESE INTERNS & TEACHER SUPPORTS: The PTA pays part of the cost of bringing interns
from Taiwan who support our Mandarin immersion classrooms, as well as professional
development, conferences, and GATE certifications for all our teachers.
CURRICULUM/TESTING: Your donations enable our students to have supplemental hands-on
science programs, the new iReady online reading and math program, Mystery Science,
RazKids, Quizlet, non-fiction readers, student planners, and more.
FIELD TRIPS: The PTA pays for meaningful and fun off-site learning excursions and
transportation for all K – 5 classrooms to complement in-class instruction.
COMMUNITY BUILDING: The PTA hosts school events to engage our community and provide
enhanced educational experiences (Art Night, Science Night, Chinese New Year, etc.), school
gardens, and more.
How much should I give?
Our aim is 100% participation — we want each family to make a commitment to their student’s
education. If each family gives $2 a school day per student ($30 a month / $360 a year), we
can meet our budget. Saturday Mandarin schools cost about $720 a year for one 3-hour class a
week. BAG asks for ½ that while your children receive 5X as many Mandarin instructional
hours.
However, no donation is too large or too small. Please give what you can.
