Kindergarten through fifth grade students and their teachers said a collective “No” to drugs in their annual Red Ribbon Week door decoration event. The creativity flowed from Halloween themes to musical doors, such as this one from a first grade classroom. The common thread that tied all 15 classrooms together? A pledge to remain drug-free.

Barnard Mandarin Magnet Elementary School’s annual Literacy Night, held on October 20, was a scary success. A crowd of nearly 200 students, siblings, parents, and volunteers attended this award-winning, annual event, which aims to show children how reading and writing can be fun.

Students from Barnard Elementary School, a Mandarin immersion magnet school in Pacific Beach, performed before representatives from Mayor Kevin Faulconer’s office, San Diego Unified School District Superintendent Cindy Marten, school board trustees, and visiting Chinese dignitaries on September 26.

In China, the Moon Festival is one of the oldest and most important holidays of the year, a time when family and friends celebrate the autumn harvest together. Students from Barnard, a Mandarin immersion magnet school in Pacific Beach, showcased their Chinese cultural talents to thousands of people on September 23 at the 2017 Moon Festival in Balboa Park.

When word got out that Hurricane Harvey damaged more than 200 schools and destroyed thousands of homes in the City of Houston, the families of Barnard Elementary School immediately went into action.
